OTS Environmental Policy Print

As approved by the Board of Directors on April 7, 2008

OTS is distinctive for its leadership in education, research, and the responsible use of natural resources in the tropics. Our goal is to contribute to the appreciation, understanding, and protection of nature and the human environment. We recognize that our operations have environmental impacts. We are determined to minimize those impacts, and to become as distinctive for our environmental operating performance as we are for our educational and scientific programs.

Continuous Improvement Commitment

We are committed to continuous improvement of our environmental operating performance with particular emphasis on

  • Application of sound science,
  • Pollution prevention,
  • Carbon emission reduction, and
  • Protection and restoration of biodiversity.

Regulatory Compliance Commitment

We will comply with all local and national environmental laws and regulations wherever we operate. Furthermore, we will seek to apply innovation and the best international operating practices to exceed regulatory requirements wherever possible.

Environmental Management System

We will implement this environmental policy through a comprehensive environmental management system with specific objectives and clearly assigned staff responsibilities.

Energy Use

We will strive to optimize energy use to improve efficiency, and we will guide OTS operations toward carbon neutrality.

Resource Management

We will develop and implement resource management plans for all of our operating sites.

Policy Integration in Services and Products

We will integrate environmental awareness into OTS educational courses, research activities, publications, ecotourism facilities and activities, and gift shop products.

Recycling and Waste Management

We will evaluate our waste stream and will separate, compost, recycle, and manage hazardous waste to minimize landfilling and to reduce the environmental impacts of our operations.

Green Purchasing

We will evaluate our purchasing and, where feasible, make choices that minimize environmental impact and waste generation.

Infrastructure

We will endeavor to apply environmentally responsible green design and construction principles and techniques to any new construction or infrastructure improvement.

Training

We will implement our policy through training and education of:

  • Staff,
  • Researchers,
  • Students, and
  • Eco-tour visitors.

Audit

We will conduct internal audits and report annually on our environmental performance.
